Sue on stage

Sue Daugherty, RD, LDN – Chief Executive Officer, MANNA

Sue Daugherty, Chief Executive Officer of MANNA in Philadelphia, PA, joined the organization in December 1999, as a Registered Licensed Dietitian. Sue was instrumental in MANNA’s shift from an agency in the 1990s that provided comfort and care to those dying from AIDS, to an organization helping people with over 70 different illnesses win the fight of their life through nutrition counseling and home-delivered medically appropriate meals.

At MANNA, Sue has held several positions, including, Director of Nutrition and Client Services, Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director, and in 2014, Chief Executive Officer. As CEO, Sue has appeared on television and been quoted extensively in the press, always promoting her belief that food is medicine. Most recently, Sue was pivotal in a local news story produced by a NBC affiliate entitled, “HPP and MANNA’s ‘Food as Medicine’ changing lives.” Since its airing in November 2015 this story has gained national attention, as it has been replayed in 37 distinct metropolitan areas. The piece highlights a ground-breaking partnership between MANNA and a Philadelphia area Medicaid Managed Care Organization, which is reimbursing MANNA’s provision of medically-appropriate meals for many people suffering and struggling within the community.

Sue also garnered national recognition in June 2013 when she co-authored a key study, “Examining Health Care Costs Among MANNA Clients and a Comparison Group” which was published in the Journal of Primary Care & Community Health. This work examined the cost savings associated with MANNA’s model towards community health. Later that year, Sue presented this work at the Annual Food & Nutrition Conference in Houston, Texas.

Beyond her commitment to the local Philadelphia community, Sue’s work also has a global investment and reach. In 2007, Sue represented the Association of Nutrition Service Agencies (ANSA) in the African country of Namibia, where she developed nutrition programs for Hope Initiatives, an organization that provides care for orphans and vulnerable children impacted by HIV/AIDs. Sue served as a board member of ANSA from 2010-2012.

Other accolades include, the 2015 Jefferson College of Population Health Education Hero Award, Comcast’s Newsmakers selection, the Cancer Treatment Center’s America Caregiver Women of the Week Award, and Bank of America’s Neighborhood Builders Award. Sue was also selected to the AACO Ryan White Planning Committee, a position she held from 2005 to 2007.
