Fins Postal Swim to Benefit MANNA
Philadelphia FINS

The Fins Aquatics Club, Philadelphia's gay swim team, hosted its annual fundraiser on Saturday, January 24, 2009 from 10am to 1pm, at the Friends Select School, 17th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

The team traditionally selects a local non-profit as recipient of half the proceeds of its Postal Swim. This year the team donated 50 percent of the money collected to MANNA! The other 50 percent benefited the Fins.

During the event, participants swam as many laps as they could within a one-hour period to compete with other swimmers across the country. There were two one-hour sessions: from 10:30 to 11:30 and 11:45 to 12:45. Swimmers can either do a full hour or form relays. The results were then mailed into United States Masters Swimming (hence the national name of "Postal Swim"), with awards granted by age group and gender.

This event caused quite a splash and supported two great causes at once!

EMPTY BOWLS
December 1, 2007
World AIDS Day

Visit The Clay Studio to register

The Empty Bowls Project: In 1990 a high school art teacher in Michigan wanted to help his students raise funds to support a food drive. What evolved was a class project to make ceramic bowls for a fund raising meal. Guests were served a simple meal, and were invited to keep the bowl as a reminder of hunger in the world.

By the following year the originators had developed this concept into Empty Bowls, a project to provide support for food banks, soup kitchens, and other organizations that fight hunger. Since then Empty Bowls events have been held throughout the world, and millions of dollars have been raised to combat hunger.

Please join The Clay Studio, Whole Foods Market and MANNA on December 1, 2007 to help combat hunger in our region through our first-ever Empty Bowls Benefit Workshops.

In this fun hands-on workshop, each participant will create a handcrafted bowl using slabs of clay and molds. The bowls will be decorated using various surface design techniques and colored slips and underglazes. Completed bowls will be available for pick up on December 15th at The Clay Studio and will serve as a reminder of all of those who go hungry in this world.

The workshop takes place at Whole Foods Market located at 929 South Street. During the workshops, Whole Foods Market will provide a simple meal.

Proceeds benefit MANNA’s work to provide nourishment in the region.
