The paintings in Surfacing are about glazing. Artist Paul Davis Jones has applied and manipulated multiple layers of paint and metallic pigments on the canvas until they combine into a finished work. During the process, shapes similar to bamboo stalks, rain streaks, swirls, veils, pools and grids emerge in counterpoint to the constant circles that play on every level of the work. Elements in every painting compete for the attention of the viewer who is free to engage circles floating on the surface or a ravaged shape within its depths. As Jones states, “I see the paintings like a theatrical production. The star may be downstage center trying to command the attention of an audience member who is captured by a pretty face downstage left.”
