 March is National Nutrition Month, created by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) to focus attention on making healthy food choices everyday.  Every year there is a new theme and this year's theme is "from the ground up".  Eating whole grains, fruits and vegetables embodies this year's theme, thereofre this month...Focus on Whole Grains...

What are whole grains?

  • Whole grains are found in grains such as wheat, rye, barley, oats, quinoa, corn, and rice.
  • Whole grains are an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

What are the benefits of whole grains?

  • Whole grains have been shown to reduce risk of:

    • Heart disease by 25-36%
    • Stroke by 37%
    • Type II diabetes by 21-27%
    • Digestive system cancers by 21-43%
  • Whole grains contain fiber which along with adequate fluid intake and moderate exercise can help with regularity.
  • Eating whole grains helps keep you full longer and can promote weight loss.

 

How much should I eat?

  • It is important to consume 5-6 servings of grains each day, and at least 3 servings should come from whole grains.
  • A serving of whole grain = 1/2 cup of brown rice, 1 slice of 100% whole wheat bread, or 3 cups of popped popcorn.
