Preparation and delivery of over 875,000 meals annually requires a high degree of organization. MANNA is unique in that in addition to its internal infrastructure, its capacity relies upon sustaining the volunteer corps that comprises 97% of the agency’s workforce.
"I came to MANNA in 1991, three years after I retired as a banker. I feel like it’s my organization. It makes me feel good. Needed. I get back so much more than I give. First thing I did was walking deliveries to some of our clients in Center City. I didn't just deliver the meals, I had personal relationships. In many cases, I was their link to the outside world. I felt that I was really doing something.Once we moved to 23rd and Ranstead Streets, I did more. I delivered, I answered phones, and I stuffed envelopes. Pretty soon I was helping plan distribution. I do whatever's needed. I'm scheduled two days a week, but I live so close I’m always stopping by to do what needs doing.MANNA is like my home. It’s in my heart. I’ve made friends with the staff and other volunteers. MANNA depends on us. It’s more of a commitment than my job was."
